6 Degrees Of Me

Just Kicking It

A Car With A Set Of Lungs

theaircar.jpg

The MiniC.A.T beats the pants off of my dream car in terms of being enviro-friendly. But damn is it UGLY. Businessweek has a decent review of this magical ugly car that propels through the narrow streets of europe at a top speed of 68 mph. The difference between this car and other nitrous/gasoline/diesel/electric powered automobiles is that this one runs on good old fashioned lemonade air.

It has some pretty astounding features:

1. A computer that can integrate with your GPS/GSM/Emergency systems. (And yes, I know that most decent car rentals, including the Cadillac DTS that I got upgraded to during my North Carolina getaway come with these features standard but the damn car runs on AIR people).

2. A SINGLE cable electrical system. Every single electrical system in the C.A.T is controlled by microcontrolles so one tiny radio transmitter sends instructions to the lights, indicators etc.

Note: I tried to get power to the radio in my 98 Accord this past weekend. I could have used a single cable electrical system.

3. Tenhours of driving time per gulp of air. It takes about 3 minutes to fill up the tank

4. Cost to fill tank = 1.5 euros which based on my calculations is about 9 dollars. Pretty cheap if you ask me.

5. Since the compressed air is cooler that same air can be used to cool the air in the cabin on those warm summer nights. No word on whether or not whether or not the popsicle maker that was in the initial designs will make it into the final product.

6. Final Cost = 5.500 pounds. Use my euro calculation above and multiply that number by 6 to find out how much it would cost in the US

The article was fairly decent and covered most of the questions that one would ask. But being jerZ where it was like 50 degrees a month ago, I was left wondering about how the car is heat. Well that and where I could get some nice spinners for the wheels.
