6 Degrees Of Me

Just Kicking It

our pals in North Korea –

bush_finger_flip1.jpgSometimes I don’t understand my country’s foreign policy. Perhaps it’s because everyone who’s a generation older than me in my family is a foreigner. Maybe it’s because world relations are not as simple as they appear. Either way, I’ve sometimes questioned the way we handle situations abroad.

N. Korea tested a nuclear weapon today. They have been developing weapons for some time and were allegedly able to detonate a WMD (hey, I couldn’t resist). Here’s what I don’t understand. Let’s take the street that you live on as an example. Let’s say that, many years ago, one of your neighbors went into another house down the street and shot everyone inside dead. There is a cause for concern right? Now somehow, through outstanding representation, this person was able to continue living in the same house without any repercussions. Would you be nervous? Would you think about ways of protecting yourself and your family? You should have the choice of the right to bear arms also.

Granted, the analogy isn’t perfect. In this current situation we have Kim Jong-il who, as a blantant understatement, is not the nicest guy in the world. But I’ve never understood what gives us the right to tell another nation what they can and can’t do. Do I believe that North Korea’s nuclear armament is a threat to us or the rest of the world? Nope. I just think they want a big gun believing that big guns garner big respect. We’ll soon see whether or not that’s the case. The most interesting thing that i find about nuclear arms and their proliferation is that, in terms of actual usage, our country is the only one to boast the title of an actual user.
